Human Rights and Democratization in Eastern Partnership Countries

Curriculum

The Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratization is an interdisciplinary programme. Students are expected to enrol for two years (4 semesters, full-time study) with a workload equivalent to 120 ECTS credits [1]. The curriculum of the Programme consists of two main sections: Learning and Research. Students gain credits both for learning and research parts of the Programme.

The first semester of the Master’s Programme is aimed at the acquisition of a theoretical base of human rights and democracy. The first semester is divided into 4 thematic sections. All 4 thematic sections include required introductory  courses on key theoretical issues in the fields of human rights and democratization. During the first semester the following courses are offered:

  • Theory of Democracy
  • Theoretical Bases of Human Rights
  • EU and Democracy
  • The United Nation’s Human Rights System
  • European Judicial Protection of Human Rights
  • Mass Media and Democracy
  • Protection of the Rights of National Minorities
  • Protection of Human Rights during Armed Conflicts
  • Criminal-legal Protection of Human Rights

 

The second semester is aimed at deepening the theoretical knowledge in the field through compulsory and elective courses. The semester is divided into 3 thematic sections. During the second semester the following courses are offered:

  • Human Rights and Democratization in Eastern Partnership Programme
  • Electoral Rights
  • Transitology
  • International Human Rights
  • Peace, Security and Democratic Governance
  • Local Self-Governance, Public Participation and Local Democracy in Transitional Countries
  • Conflict Resolution through Democratization

 

The third semester is devoted to field specialization and is run by one of the three partner universities. Students have the opportunity to specialize in one of three pathways: Political Science, Legal or Interdisciplinary.

  • The Political Science Pathway (Belarusian State University);
  • The Legal Pathway (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv);
  • The Interdisciplinary Pathway (University of European Political and Economic Studies).

 

The Political Science Pathway focuses on issues of human rights and democratization within the framework of the discipline of Political Science.

  • Democracy and Democratization in Contemporary Europe
  • Theory of Political Systems
  • The EU Transformation: Political and Institutional Aspects
  • EU and CIS Countries: Transplanting Human Rights Experience
  • International Security and Human Rights
  • The European Convention of Human Rights
  • Universal Mechanisms and Procedures of Human Rights Protection
  • Human Rights and Targeted Sanctions of International Organizations
  • International Protection of Children Rights

 

The Legal Pathway is aimed at deepening students’ understanding of the legal aspects of human rights and democracy and covers a wide range of issues in the fields of human rights and democracy from a legal perspective. 

Courses offered:

  • Interpretation and Application of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)
  • Introduction to the European Human Rights System (Role of the European Court on Human Rights in Enforcing and Safeguarding Human Rights in Europe)
  • Civil Rights under the European Convention of Human Rights
  • Civil Remedies of Human Rights
  • Human Rights in Criminal Proceedings
  • Administrative Justice as an Instrument of Human Rights Protection
  • Human Rights and the Environment
  • Asylum and Legal Protection of Refugees

 

The Interdisciplinary Pathway addresses major issues in the field of human rights and democracy from the perspective of various disciplines.

Courses offered:

  • Guarantee of Human Rights in Detention Institutions
  • Human Rights in environmental protection
  • Democratization through Europeanization: the EU’s promotion of democracy in the Eastern neighbourhood
  • Principles of applying the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) into domestic law
  • Strengthening Democracy through Civic Engagement
  • International Civic Assistance and Collaboration in the Process of Democratization
  • Protection of Human Rights in the Enforcement of Tax Liability
  • Multiculturalism and Intercultural Communication within the EU

 

The fourth semester of studies is devoted to the practical application of gained theoretical knowledge in the field of human rights and democratization and mainly addresses the research part of the Programme. Students are expected to finalize their Master’s theses and conduct internships.

 

[1] The European Credit Transfer System, or ECTS, is a credit system for higher education used in the European Higher Education Area which comprises all countries engaged in the Bologna Process. ECTS are a numeral indicator allocated to a course unit. Credits are allocated to entire qualifications or study programmes as well as to their different components. The number of credits allocated for each component reflects student workload necessary to achieve the learning outcomes. 60 ECTS credits are the equivalent of an academic year, 30 ECTS credits are the equivalent of a semester.
